SÃO PAULO GP EXPANDS ESG ACTIONS AND LEAVES A LEGACY FOR THE CIRCUIT

São Paulo, November 2024 – The São Paulo F1 GP continues to expand and strengthen its initiatives in support of Environmental, Social, and Governance pillars. The current management aims to transform the event, one of the continent’s leading races, into a model of sustainability.
In 2024, the São Paulo GP gifted the Interlagos Circuit with two permanent legacies: photovoltaic solar panels to contribute to the circuit’s clean energy supply, and a recycling sorting center. Both were already in use during this year’s São Paulo GP and will remain available year-round for all events held at the circuit.
The São Paulo GP also offset 100% of the event’s carbon emissions, as it has for the past three editions. The 124 solar panels have an average monthly generation capacity of about 7,000 kW. Any surplus energy not consumed by the circuit is fed back into the grid, reducing operating costs. This system also cuts carbon emissions by an average of 30% to 50% compared to traditional electricity sources. Of the total, 100 panels are installed over Sector B, supplying power directly to Sectors B, Pit Stop, and Tribuna, while 24 panels power the recycling sorting center.
The center, built from recycled plastic blocks, supports the circuit in separating materials. Operations involve partnerships with local cooperatives, generating income for families in the surrounding community through recyclable collection during events. At the São Paulo GP, clearly marked bins placed throughout the venue encourage attendees to adopt the principles of rethink, reduce, refuse, reuse, and recycle.
To reduce disposable waste, the São Paulo GP introduced reusable cups this year for all beverage consumption, including water, juices, soft drinks, and beer (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Another sustainable initiative was the provision of water in carton packaging by partner A9, reducing plastic bottle use, along with installing free drinking fountains in several areas of the circuit. A9 also engaged with the public through the recycling of its bottle caps.
Regarding waste disposal, cooking oil from food areas was recycled, as was the motor oil from Formula 1 cars – an initiative carried out with partner Lwart, responsible for collecting and repurposing the used lubricants, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability.
Generators in the event’s dining and service areas were powered by Bevant Biofuel, further reducing the event’s carbon footprint. For carbon offsetting, the São Paulo GP partnered with two organizations: Greener, which specializes in the tokenization of green assets such as carbon credits, and the Solví Group, which certifies carbon offsets through its “My Neutral Carbon Activation” program. Greener uses blockchain technology to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the green asset market, ensuring traceability through digital certificates. Solví offsets carbon through waste-to-energy credits.
In sustainable mobility, one notable initiative was the launch of the GP SP Express Train – Pole Position, a special ViaMobilidade service that, in its debut year, transported over 108,000 people to the circuit during event days. This service provided fast, safe access to the venue while reducing carbon emissions from motor vehicles.
Finally, the event offered dedicated transport points for people with disabilities (PWD) in partnership with ATENDE+ (SPTrans) and SMPED (São Paulo Municipal Secretariat for People with Disabilities), enhancing accessibility and inclusion for all visitors.
Through these and other initiatives, the São Paulo GP reaffirmed its commitment to innovative, sustainable practices, making the event a model of environmentally responsible and socially inclusive management.
