SÃO PAULO F1 GP REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
The São Paulo GP arrives at its new edition reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability. The event is part of F1’s global program focused on reducing environmental impact, with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Since 2021, the São Paulo GP has been implementing a set of actions aimed at environmental sustainability. Among the initiatives, it has begun offsetting 100% of its CO₂ emissions. The 2024 edition was also a milestone in terms of material recycling. The implementation of a returnable cup system, with more than 120,000 units distributed and a 25% return rate, prevented the disposal of around 4 tons of plastic into the environment. Still in the area of material reuse, we highlight the environmentally appropriate disposal of 44 tons of non-reusable tires, in addition to the collection and re-refining of lubricating oil used by the teams.
New advances
For this year, the event plans new advances in its five strategic areas of action regarding sustainability: waste management, encouraging the use of public transportation, renewable energy, carbon emission reduction, and social initiatives. To ensure engagement from various audiences, the São Paulo Grand Prix will strengthen communication with educational campaigns on proper waste disposal, sustainable transportation, conscious use of resources, diversity and inclusion, and combating harassment. In another initiative, suppliers, teams, and partners will receive a sustainability guide and specific contractual clauses on good environmental practices.
One of the goals for this year is to eliminate the use of disposable plastic by expanding the returnable cup system and replacing single-use utensils with biodegradable or reusable materials. Another highlight is the improvement of the greenhouse gas emissions inventory, with more precise data and integration of suppliers and logistical partners. The entire process will follow greenhouse gas protocols, with full compensation of emissions through certified carbon credits from waste recovery, in partnership with Grupo Solví.
Waste management will also be expanded with source segregation, traceability via a specialized company, partnerships with local cooperatives for recyclable sorting, and composting of organic waste. Tires, wood, cooking oil, and other special waste will continue to receive certified disposal. The used lubricating oil from race cars will once again be sent for the production of new high-performance products, returning to the market through a partnership with Lwart Soluções Ambientais. The material-sorting work will provide income for women in vulnerable situations.
In mobility, the plan includes reactivating the Cidade Dutra Station, connecting the train line directly to the circuit, as well as expanding public transportation and accessible options for people with reduced mobility.
In energy, the focus will be on expanding the use of renewable sources, such as the circuit’s photovoltaic system, and gradually reducing reliance on diesel generators. In 2024, the event achieved two-star certification in the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme. The goal for 2025 is to obtain the third star, the highest level of accreditation, which recognizes sustainable practices and continuous improvement in environmental governance.
“We believe that sport is a powerful platform to mobilize people and deliver messages to a broad audience. We want to be agents and promoters of a culture of environmental sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. To promote a legacy of positive change with each Grand Prix, bringing direct benefits to the local community in the form of jobs and income. All of this combined with environmental preservation,” says Alan Adler, CEO of the São Paulo GP.
Commitment to social responsibility
The São Paulo GP reinforces its commitment to social responsibility with a series of initiatives focused on diversity, inclusion, professional training, income generation, and food security.
To promote a more diverse environment, in line with F1’s guidelines, the São Paulo GP has invested in training its staff and engaging with its partners. Suppliers have been encouraged to promote diversity in their recruitment processes. Another priority is improving accessibility at the circuit, ensured by SMPED and Atende+/SPTrans services. To make the São Paulo GP a safe environment for everyone, actions to combat harassment and discrimination are being developed.
Among the actions to generate jobs and income, we highlight support for recycling cooperatives and the encouragement of creating and maintaining community gardens, a project carried out in Jardim Ibirapuera. In professional training, a highlight is the program for training women in vulnerable economic situations in automotive mechanics. The project, carried out in partnership with Escola do Mecânico, will train another 100 women this year. The program is supported by Mubadala Capital.
In the area of food security, we highlight the Food Donation program, which sends surplus food from GP restaurants to social institutions. In 2024, more than 15 tons of food were donated to the institutions SEFRAS, Formiguinhas em Ação, and Escudo do Bem.
The Formula 1 MSC Cruises Grande Prêmio de São Paulo 2025 takes place this weekend at the José Carlos Pace Circuit in Interlagos and once again promises to gather a record audience, consolidating São Paulo as one of the motorsport capitals of the world. All race tickets are sold out.
